Above the Vojnik - nad Vojnikom
Vojnik is a settlement and the administrative centre of its municipality, located just 4 kilometres north of Celje. It lies in a transitional landscape between the Celje Plain and the hilly foothills of the Pohorje massif. Its position along important transport routes has, over the centuries, decisively shaped the economic and social development of the area.
Historical overview
Vojnik was first mentioned as a market town in written sources in 1306, indicating its early economic significance within the wider Celje region. Like many medieval settlements, Vojnik was repeatedly affected by fires that left a strong mark on its appearance and development. The most devastating occurred in 1839, when the town was almost completely destroyed. Reconstruction was lengthy, but it gave Vojnik a renewed urban structure.
The 19th century – a turning point
The mid‑19th century brought major changes. The construction of the Southern Railway through Celje redirected the main transport routes, which led to a gradual economic decline in Vojnik. The once vibrant craft, trade, and hospitality activities that had formed the backbone of market‑town life began to diminish. Nevertheless, Vojnik retained its role as a local centre and adapted to the new circumstances.
Contemporary Vojnik
Today, Vojnik is once again strengthening its identity. Traditional activities that once formed the foundation of its development are being revived, while new economic and cultural initiatives are emerging. The town is proud of its rich heritage, lively community life, and well‑preserved historic market‑town core, which reveals to visitors the many layers of its turbulent yet resilient past.
