On the area of Griža rising (117 m), known in Italian as "Monte Sei Busi", on the Doberdo Karst plateau (Carso di Doberdò), are the remains of a fortified Italian defense line featuring concrete-built trenches.
This fortified line once stretched from Doberdò (Doberdob) to Monfalcone (Tržič). It was constructed by order of the Italian General Luigi Cadorna, who intended it to halt any potential counter-offensive by the Austro-Hungarian Army. The site remains a stark reminder of the industrial scale of trench warfare on the Isonzo Front.
Nearby the fortified trenches lies a karst depression or dolina named "Dolina del XV Bersaglieri del Monte Sei Busi". At the beginning of the war, this dolina was controlled by Austro-Hungarian forces. However, during the Third Battle of the Isonzo in the autumn of 1915, it was occupied by Italian troops.
Following its capture, the dolina became a vital logistical centre for the Italian forces. It housed a small hospital for immediate medical assistance, a commanders' office, and a munitions warehouse, all sheltered within the natural protection of the karst hollow.
