Vipavski Križ is an old fortified settlement situated on a hill in the heart of the Vipava Valley. The settlement was first documented in the 13th century. Due to its strategic importance, the castle was built in the 15th century, and the settlement was fortified to protect against Ottoman raids.
The town gained its status in 1532. Today, the most notable sights are the Parish Church of the Holy Cross, the Capuchin monastery (established in 1637) with its famous library, and the ruins of the once mighty four-towered castle.
