Vipava Castle (Old Castle). Today, only ruins remain of the former Old Castle situated on the hill above the town of Vipava. The fortification was first documented in 1275 but was already deserted by the 17th century. The castle hill offers a magnificent vista across the entire Vipava Valley.
The strategic position of this area has placed it at the center of several pivotal historical events. In the valley below, one of the most important battles of late antiquity took place on September 5–6, 394: the Battle of the Frigidus. It was fought between the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius I and the Western Roman ruler Eugenius. Legend has it that the fierce bora wind played a decisive role in the outcome.
